The Township of Madawaska Valley was settled by Kashub, German, English, Polish, Wendish and Irish immigrants who made their way up the Opeongo Line and Peterson Road in the late 1800s. Settlers cleared the land and built houses and barns of logs. The stony ground yielded the raw materials for miles of stone fences that still abound among the wooded hills.

With the rapid growth of the lumbering industry came the construction of a railway, stretching from Ottawa to Parry Sound. In Barry’s Bay, the historic wooden water tower is the last remaining one in Ontario and the only one in Canada that still stands on a wooden base.

Barry's Bay, Combermere, Wilno - each of our three population centres is a unique community with recreation facilities, schools, festivities and churches that form the basis of community life. Residents enjoy the comfort of small-town living along with the security of excellent health and education services.

It’s time you visited the Madawaska Valley to see if you, too, will stay for a lifetime.
